“Sparsh” is a name suggested by a group of youngsters for a three-day residential camp conducted for them in the year 2007 at ‘Niveditha’, Chunangumvely, Aluva. The name denotes the “Touch of Jesus”, the divine touch. The program, organized by Dr. Joyce Kaithakottil, Director, Department of Youth Apostolate of the Archdiocese of  Ernakulam-Angamaly, had the aim of giving an experience of divine touch in the hearts of every participant of the program.  Youth from different parishes in the city of Kochi participated in the camp and they all had a beautiful spiritual experience.

The participants expressed their wish to have a follow-up program of the camp. They longed to come together every month to relive their experience. Since March 2007 they used to meet the last Sunday of every month in different parishes in the city. The participants brought new members to this spiritual fellowship. They liked to retain the name “Sparsh” for this spiritual gathering of the youth. This has also become the platform for the catholic youth, belonging to different organizations like KCYM, CLC and Mission League, to come together to pray, learn and celebrate their faith.

How does it function?  The representatives from different parishes meet every month at Youth Centre, Azad Road, Kaloor, with Fr. Jerry Njaliath, present coordinator of the program. The gathering is conducted on the last Sunday of every month from 2.30 pm to 5.30 pm. in one of the parishes (Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamaly) in the city. It starts with a prayer and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament followed by an input session on the themes suggested by the youth. After the presentation, the time for an interactive session is given. After a lively discussion, the meeting concludes with prayer, followed by tea and snacks. The topics for discussion include faith, politics, media, family, sexuality, new age groups, social teachings of the Catholic Church etc.,etc.

We hope to create a spiritual network of youth in the city. We visualize a new generation of catholic youth committed to the person of Jesus and his dreams of a new society. Even those who do not belong to any parish in the city, but is interested to come for the gathering is always welcome. We also wish that this fellowship will create young people committed to the church and society. We would also like to help the youngsters in confronting the problems in their personal life or in the family.
